Applying sociological theory and the use of metrics to the history of the early church, Stark provided a series of compelling arguments to show how the Jesus Movement grew from a tiny group of first century Jews to numerical dominance in the harsh and antagonistic environment of the Roman Empire three hundred years later. In 1996 sociologist Rodney Stark burst into prominence with the publication of his controversial and iconoclastic work, The Rise of Christianity.
